An incendiary composition comprises an inflammable liquid carbon compound thickened by mixing with a polystyrene or with a mixture of a polystyrene and a polyisobutylene. Inflammable liquids referred to are carbon disulphide, petroleum fractions, benzene, toluene, xylene, and unrefined or waste oil products. Turpentine, naphthalene, tetrahydronaphthalene or solid paraffins may be added to provide smoke. Carbon disulphide is used when a smokeless flame is required and may be mixed with a hydrocarbon. The thickener may be present in an amount of 3-15% by weight. Finely divided combustible solids may be added, for example, magnesium, aluminium, lithium, calcium silicide, lithium silicide, ferrosilicon and red phosphorus. Other solid additives are diatomaceous earth or clay brick powder as a slag former and phenol-formaldehyde resin or benzene sulphohydrazide as a foaming agent. Examples are given of suitable compositions; in one example anhydrous sodium nitrate is included in addition to substances specified above. The compositions are used in explosive or non-explosive missiles of the Napalm type; for explosive missiles, the liquid content of the composition should not be greater than 4 to 5 times that of the thickener.
