[Also in Division G1] A method of quantitatively determining an element in a liquid or gaseous medium comprises irradiating the medium with the characteristic X-ray spectrum of an element excited by α- or #-rays and having an atomic number exceeding that of the element to be determined by at least 2, and measuring the specific absorption in the region of the K- or L-absorption edge of the element to be determined. To determine cobalt in benzene, the mixture is passed through a cell 2.
