A hydraulic actuated advancing mine roof support system comprises a forward roof support element A Fig. 1 in advance of the gear head (shown in broken lines) and having roof bars 12 projecting rearwardly over the gear head and forwardly towards the stable face S, a rear roof supporting element C having a roof bar 12 projecting forwardly over a gear headcarrying element B also having roof bars 18 extending over the gear head and having a skid 16 Fig. 2 on which the gear head is mounted; the three said support elements A, B, C being connected in line by hydraulic rams 11 for sequential advance such that after the first cut element B is lowered, advanced and reset, during the second cut the forward support element A is advanced followed by the rear element C, after completion of the second cut element B is again advanced and after the third cut elements A, C are sequentially advanced prior to the fourth cut which completes the cycle. As shown three groups of elements A, B and C are arranged in parallel and two of the groups are each associated with forward and rear ripping lip support elements D, E having roof support bars 24, 26 and hydraulic props 22, 25. Initially supports D, E are close up to C and after the second cut are moved up to C and a web of ripping equal in depth to two cuts is taken during the fourth cut. For the drawing off operation elements E are closed up to D, D is closed up to C and E is closed up to D again.
