Cable bolt design techniques are well established for hardrock applications. This thesis presents a multifaceted yet simple design methodology. Existing cable design techniques, best suited to the conditions at the Trout Lake and Callinan mines, are chosen and used to improve the existing cable bolt designs. The design loop was closed using the SMART (Stretch Measurement to Assess Reinforcement Tension) cable, which is capable of measuring the in situ performance of different cable types and configurations. Performance monitoring of reinforcement around excavations is critical in assessing overall stability of excavations as well as in improving and optimising reinforcement designs.;Field trails carried out at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co.'s (HBM&S) Trout Lake (Case 1) and Callinan (Case 2) mines have allowed the existing support designs to be evaluated along with alternative cable geometries. The ground conditions in the test stopes at Callinan and Trout Lake are very similar. However, the Trout Lake stope represents a very early stage in the mining sequence, while the Callinan stope represents a later, sill pillar or remnant stage of mining. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
