Cis, trans-cyclododecadiene-1,3 is obtained by the thermal decomposition of a diester of cyclododecan-1,2-dio with a C1-C12 aliphatic mono-carboxylic acid or the intermediate mono-olefinic mono-ester. The ester may be formed in situ from the diol and the acid or its anhydride and the decomposition is effected at 0.01-760 torr and 300-650 DEG C. in a packed tube. Mono-ester is also formed and this may also be pyrolysed to the diene.ALSO:An ester of cyclododec-2-en-1-ol is obtained as an intermediate by-product in the thermal decomposition of a diester of cyclododecan-1,2-diol with a C1-C12 monocarboxylic aliphatic acid to form cyclododecadiene. The diester may be formed in situ from the diol and the acid or its anhydride and the decomposition is effected at 0.01-760 torr and 300-650 DEG C.
