Alizarin derivatives of the formula FORM:1026363/C4-C5/1 wherein R is -OH or alkyl having 3 or more C atoms, n is 1 or 2, X is H, -OH, -NH2, alkylamino, arylamino or cycloalkylamino and the anthraquinone or external aryl nuclei may be substituted by halogen, hydroxyl, alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino or carboxylic acid ester groups, are employed in the dyeing of the polyolefin materials. The dyes may be prepared from 1,2,5,8-tetrahydroxyanthraquinone by converting it to its leuco form and condensing with an alkylaniline.ALSO:Polyolefin materials are mordant-dyed or metal-containing polyolefin materials are dyed with water-insoluble dyes of the formula FORM:1026363/D1-D2/1 wherein R is -OH or an alkyl of at least 3C, X is H, -OH, -NH2, alkylamino, dialkylamino, arylamino or cycloalkylamino and the anthraquinone nucleus and/or the aromatic substituent nucleus may be substituted by halogen, hydroxyl, alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, amino, alkylamino, dialkylamino or carboxylic acid ester groups, or metal complexes of the said dyes. The specified mordants are halides, sulphates, cyanates, thiocyanates and stearates of Ni, Co, Cr, Mn, Fe, V, Cu or Al which may be applied as aqueous solutions or suspensions. The dye and mordant may be applied in either sequence or simultaneously. Carriers and swelling agents may be employed. Examples are given.
