Mordant dyeing method for polyolefinic high molecular substances, and dyes therefor

Polyolefin materials are coloured by dyeing with a hydrophobic disazo dye of formula:- FORM:1057399/D1-D2/1 or FORM:1057399/D1-D2/2 wherein R is an alkyl group having more than three carbon atoms; X1, Y1, X2 and Y2 are metallizable groups, X2 and Y2 being in orthoposition in the ring; the nucleus (a) is benzene or naphthalene and the aromatic rings may be further substituted other than by SO3H. The dyeings are preferably metallized by (a) incorporating a metal compound in the polyolefin; (b) mordanting before dyeing; (c) after-metallizing; (d) simultaneous dyeing and metallizing; (e) using metallized dyes. Specified metal compounds are halides, suphates, stearates, cyanides, thiocyanates or acetates of nickel, cobalt, chromium, monganese, iron, vanadium, copper, aluminium, zinc or strontium. In examples polypropylene fibre is dyed in aqueous dispersions of the dyes together with N-stearoyl-N-methyl taurine as dispersing agent at 100 DEG C. or at 120 DEG C. under pressure. The dyeing is after-coppered, the fibre mordanted with aluminium stearate before dyeing or nickel stearate is incorporated in the polypropylene before spinning into fibres.
