In a boiling water nuclear reactor, the area of the vapour-liquid surface is increased by mounting perforated structures, within the pressure vessel, at the normal liquid surface. As shown, the wire netting screen 10 is located in the reactor pressure vessel 16 above the boiling liquid 13. The boiling liquid is stated to fill the interior of the screen and steam is passed through the holes 11. The screens may be formed of either plastics or metal. In further embodiments, not shown, several small screens are used.
