A thread rolling machine for forming threads on a rotating workpiece 15 comprises a holder 1 pivotally mounted on a support 7 and supporting threading rolls 2 and 5. The holder 1 is biased anticlockwise by a spring 11 so that the roll 5 first contacts the workpiece 15 to preform a thread on it, the final thread form being produced by the pair of rolls. Roll 2 is axially movable, against spring pressure, to enable the roll to readily follow the preformed thread on the workpiece as the roll engages the workpiece. The initial position of the holder 1 is adjustable by means of a stop 14.
