Trichloroethylene is produced by hydrogenating perchloroethylene at 200 DEG to 325 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst containing copper salts and also one or more salts of the metals potassium, rubidium, and caesium. The gaseous mixture may also contain a small amount of oxygen, preferably 3% by volume of the hydrogen. The catalyst may be supported on a carrier.
