Acrylonitrile is extracted from an admixture with acetonitrile, by a mixture of water and a water-immiscible organic solvent for acrylonitrile, whereby the acetonitrile is extracted into the organic solvent. Solvents mentioned are xylene, cumene, styrene, petroleum ether, tetrachloroethane, chlorobenzene, anisole, diisopropyl ether, acetophenone, butyl phalate and acetate, and xylene is preferred. The extraction may in a counter-current system in which the organic solution of crude acrylonitrile is washed with water, or the water may be introduced at the head of a column, and the solvent at the foot, while an organic solution of acrylonitrile is withdrawn at the top. Acrylonitrile is separated by a fractional or steam distillation.
