An aqueous brine, especially sodium chloride brine, is prepared by maintaining a body of crystals of the solute of the brine in contact with a saturated solution of the solute, removing a portion of the crystals and saturated solution, and dissolving the removed material in an aqueous body, for example a dilute aqueous brine, to form the brine. Ths thus-formed brine may be clarified separating insoluble impurities, for example by flowing the brine under gravity through a settling zone.
