A fastener element of the interengaging- hooks type is made by corrugating nylon manofils over bars (not shown) and under bars 3, heat setting the manofils, applying and setting a layer of plastic 10, and cutting the loops. The cutters 71 rise between the bars 3, tilt into contact with the bars, and traverse along them to cut one limb of the loops. The bars 3 are carried by continuously moving chains with which the cutter mechanism is temporarily engaged so that the cutters accompany the moving bars. After a cutting stroke, the cutters resume their upright position, descend clear of the bars, and step backwards to operate on the next section of the fastener. At the stage shown, .the oppositely-facing hooks 11b have already been cut by another set of cutters mounted on the same carriage as the cutters 71 but longitudinally spaced from them. The carriage is mounted in a vertically-sliding carriage which, in turn, is mounted on a longitudinally-sliding carriage, all the movements (including tilting of the cutters) being effected by pneumatic jacks. The heads of the cutters (Fig. 5) have a flat surface 74a to slide against the bars 3, and a serrated cutting edge 74b.
