Gas or air filtering apparatus with counter-flow cleaning

Gases entering through a conduit 2 are filtered by passing through a number of sleevetype filter elements 6. As shown, the filter elements are mounted in three compartments 3, 4, 5 associaed with a common hopper 1, the gases being drawn through the compartments by individual fans or pumps 11, 12, 13. For the purpose of cleaning the elements 6, the extractors 11, 12, 13 are stopped, one at a time, as determined by a programme device 10. As shown, the extractor 13 is stopped whereby the gases are drawn by the other two extractors 11, 12 in a reverse direction through the elements 6 in the compartment 5 so that these elements are cleaned. In a modification, (Fig. 6, not shown) the gases are forced into the groups of filter elements by fans or pumps situated at the entry ends of the elements, and each group has its own hopper. As in Fig. 2, the groups of elements are cleaned in turn by stopping the related fan or pump to cause a reverse flow of the gases.
