[Also in Divisions G5 and H1] A magnetic tape 3 in the form of a magnetite layer coated with a thermoplastic adhesive and mounted on a carrier is fed over an electrically heated roller 22 before being applied to a cinematograph film 2 to which a solvent has previously been applied by a device 25, the carrier being stripped off subsequently. The supply and take-up spools 4 and 9 for the film are belt driven, and the tension of the film is kept constant by band brakes 15 acting on the spools and controlled by a lever 18 which carries a roller 19 bearing on the film on spool 4. The roller 22 is maintained at a constant adjustable temperature, e.g. about 130‹ C., to make the thermoplastic layer liquid and tacky, and a roller 43 presses on the driving roller 7 to press dust particles on the film or tape into the adhesive layer. A guide pin 23 is adjustable to alter the position of the tape on the film, and the position can be observed by a microscope 44. The tape may be applied to one or both edges of the film. The adhesive may be acetyl cellulose, and the carrier may be a polyester which sticks to the acetyl cellulose only by adhesion so that it may be stripped off easily.
