1,075,760. Packaging. BEMROSE & SONS Ltd. Feb. 18, 1966 [Dec. 12, 1964; Jan. 9, 1965], Nos. 50681/64 and 1065/65. Heading B8C. A carton comprising hinged tray-like body and lid portions, Fig. 4 (not shown), is erected, filled and closed in apparatus in which a moving hollow punch 20, Fig. 1, forces the carton blank into engagement within a female die to form one portion and to fold up the other portion to an angle of about 90 degrees to the first portion. The continued movement of the punch then pushes the partly folded carton, together with an article to be packaged, fed into the container during this movement, into a closing mechanism where the lid and tray are folded together and the carton closed. In the embodiment, the punch is supported on a feed tray 19, on which an article to be packaged is placed: As the punch is moved forward, a blank, held by supports 28 with its lid portion in the path of travel of the punch, is carried into the female die aperture, defined by freely rotatable rollers 25. Fingers 26, projecting from the four corners of the die aperture, first flex its front and back gussets (D, DSP1/SP), Fig. 3 (not shown), the rollers then fold in the side flaps of the lid and also fold up the side flaps of the body portion. The continuing travel of the punch pushes the carton lid and body fully through the mouth of the die and into a folding box 30. A closing head 32 is formed with. fingers 33, see also Fig. 2 (not shown), which engage the front wall (LSP1/SP) of the carton and retain it in the head. As the feed tray and punch advance, a pusher 34 moves the article to be packaged along the feed tray to present it within the confines of the folding box 30 and thus within the body portion of the carton itself. When the carriage and punch are retracted, the pusher 34 remains behind to retain the article in the carton. At the end of the retraction movement, the closing head is pivoted downwards to fold the lid portion over the tray portion. Simultaneously a hinged plate 54 erects the back wall (B), Fig. 3 (not shown), of the carton, and the front wall (TSP1/SP) is folded upwardsby a cam-operated hinged plate 60. This plate carries a projection 65 which bears on the front wall (TSP1/SP) of the carton body just above a slot (TSP2/SP), to open it to receive a co-operating tab (LSP2/SP) on the front wall (LSP1/SP) of the lid, as it descends. The succeeding blank, as it is pushed into the female die pushes the previously filled and closed carton from the rear end of the machine. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the rollers 25 are replaced by two vertical guide bars (75) and a horizontal bar (76), having a curved face (76a), which folds down the front wall (LSP1/SP) of the lid. The pusher 34 is omitted, lugs (74) in the feed tray ensuring that an article is carried forward into the carton tray. A plunger (77) in the folding box acts as a retaining bar for the article when the punch is withdrawn. Before the punch moves between the guide bars (75) it strikes and trips a hinged plate (85) which is thereby swung upwards to flex and break the gussets (D).
