In locally anodizing valve metals through a template by filling the apertured portions with a viscous electrolyte and passing a current through the electrolyte and valve metal which is provided as a coating on a substrate, the template is formed by an apertured plastics foil carrying a pressure-sensitive adhesive by which the foil is adhered to the valve metal. The foil may be applied to the valve metal by means of a die.
