A process for the manufacture of sulpholene or an alkyl homologue thereof by addition of sulphur dioxide to a 1,3-diolefin, is characterized in that an alkyl homologue of sulpholane is used as a solvent. Preferably the sulpholane solvent differs from the sulpholene product only by the absence of a double bond. Subsequently the sulpholene solution, if desired after purification treatments and partial removal of solvent, may be hydrogenated, e.g. in the presence of Raney nickel, to obtain a sulpholane. Specifications 967,476 and 969,544 are referred to.
