A photo-electric spectrometer, for use e.g. in investigating absorption of light by substances involved in fast-running chemical reactions, does a high-speed repetitive scanning of the continuously changing spectrum produced by a prism 2 receiving light, from a broad wavelength band source 1, which has passed through the reacting substances in vessel 5. The output of the scanning device 9, on to the photo-sensitive screen 8 of which the spectrum from the prism 2 is projected, is fed to a memory device 11. The device 11 also includes time scaling circuitry to allow the instantaneous representations of the continuously changing spectrum to be displayed on oscilloscope 10. Analog to digital conversion of the information is carried out by a device 12 before supplying a digital computer 13, which operates on this information and on information as to absorption co-efficients of the substances involved in the chemical reaction &c., to enable investigation of the kinetics of the reaction. Changes in biological specimens can also be investigated.
