Apparatus for looping a cord round cotton wool pads, particularly for tampons, and knotting the ends of the looped cord

[Also in Division D1] Apparatus which forms a loop of cord 3 loosely around layers of cotton wool 2 so that the cotton wool and the loop may be rolled-up to form a tampon with a withdrawal thread, comprises a conveyor 9 which grips the end of the cord and moves it around guide members 18, 50 and then grips a second part of the cord to provide the loop, a device which knots the cord to secure it in the loop, and a knife 20 which removes the loop from the remainder of the cord. The guide member 50, as shown, feeds the loop to a spring- loaded member 51 which in turn transfers the loop to a mandrel (53, 54, Figure 11-not shown) used to roll-up the cotton wool 2. The knotting device (5, Figure 1-not shown) is of spiral formation with a hook to receive the loop and is positioned concentric with the guide member 18. The conveyor 9 is provided with two separate mechanisms for gripping the ends of the cord forming the loop and is described in detail with reference to Figures 4 - 8 (not shown) and Figure 10 (not shown). The gripping mechanisms are actuated by control devices (17, 19, Figure 1- not shown) situated in the path of movement of the conveyor.
