Trioxane produced from an aqueous formaldehyde solution in the presence of an acid catalyst is separated by continuous distillation, in a distillation arrangement comprising a distillation column and a sump, of the formed trioxane and extraction thereof from the distillate by means of a solvent, by a process wherein two component streams are withdrawn from the distillation column, a first component stream being withdrawn from the head of the column, treated with solvent, and returned in circuit to the head of the column, and a second component stream being withdrawn from the column at a position below the head of the column and returned in circuit to the sump and at least trioxane plus solvent is removed from the first component stream, and water is removed from the second component stream.
