The novel compounds: 2,3,5,6-tetrahydroxy-1,4-dimethanesulphonylpiperazine and 1,2-dimethanesulphonamidoethane-1,2-diol are prepared by reacting methane sulphonamide with glyoxal in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. The presence of excess glyoxal favours the preparation of the piperazine derivative while the presence of excess methane sulphonamide favours production of the diol. Suitable catalysts are sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate and the reaction is conveniently carried out in an aqueous medium. The tetrahydroxypiperazine derivative may be esterified to give, for example, the novel tetrachloro-, tetranitrato-, and tetraacetoxy esters. The tetranitrato-ester which is a valuable constituent of explosive compositions, may also be prepared by treating the tetrachloro derivative with silver nitrate.
