In the formation of a roll of thermoplastic web material 2, a foam plastic insert 4 is inserted over the leading edge of the web 2 to prevent distortion or damage to subsequent layers of the web 2 by their overlapping the leading edge. In one form, the insert 4 is wrapped around a winding core 1 and the leading edge of the web 2 is fed between the insert 4 and the core 1. According to another arrangement (Fig. 4) the leading end of the web 2 is wrapped around the core 2 and the insert 4 is fed between the first and second convolutions of the web. The insert 4 may have a length larger or shorter than that of the core circumference, and is tapered at its trailing edge and possibly at its leading edge. It may be attached to a backing 5 of thin, flexible, but substantially non- stretchable material.
