Water-soluble azo dyes of formula A-N = N-B in which A is an aromatic or heterocyclic residue and B is an amino- or hydroxy-naphthalene residue bound in o- or p-position and which dyes are free of carboxylic and sulphonic acid groups and contain a group of formula FORM:1097627/C4-C5/1 and if desired further substituents which do not impart solubility in water, in which Y is an oxygen atom an -NH- group or a direct link, R4 is an aliphatic residue, R1, R2 and R3 are alkyl or aralkyl groups or R1 and R2 or R3 together with the nitrogen atom form a heterocyclic ring and X is an anion are prepared by (a) treating a dye of formula A-N = N-B containing a group FORM:1097627/C4-C5/2 with an alkylating or aralkylating agent or (b) an aromatic or heterocyclic amine is coupled with an amino- or hydroxy-naphthalene which couples in o- or p-position and which contains a group of the first formula above. The dyes give orange, scarlet, brown and violet colours.ALSO:In Example 6 polyacrylonitrile staple fibres are dyed to a red shade with the water-soluble quaternary ammonium compound prepared by diazotising 2-chloro-4-nitroaniline and coupling with 2-naphthylamine-5(-3sv-dimethylamino-n-propyl)-sulphonamide followed by methylation with methylsulphate.
