The scrapers may consist of a helically wound, flat steel bar, screw-shaped bent plates, or scraping rings secured to a central rod. In modifications (a) the bell-shaped device is formed of two telescoping parts having stops enabling the parts to be drawn up and pushed down in succession during the upward and downward movement of the shaft; and (b) the outer of the telescoping parts is spring loaded and is drawn up against the spring pressure and lowered by the spring during downward movement of the shaft. To prevent evaporation of the mercury, the annular chamber may have a cooling water pocket, and there may be a pipe leading to the top of the chamber for introducing particle-free gas into the device 21 to prevent particles being sucked up during upward movement of the device.
