A method for dam up the estuary of a tilting furnace

The slag flow from a tilting steel furnace is dammed by charging carbonates of a type dissociating at high temperature at the mouth of the furnace before tapping. Alkaline earth carbonates useful as slag formers in the next heat are used, and burnt lime, steel furnace slag, limestone or dolimite are placed above the dam to maintain it in position. 0.2-2.0% of carbonate by weight of melt is used.
