Granular material in an annular container 6 passes through apertures 7 in the base of the container on to the top of a plate 2, formed as a converging inlet nozzle and connected to the discharge pipe 3. The material passes through apertures 4 in the plate 2 into a gas stream flowing through the space between the plate 2 and a lower plate 1 to the pipe 3. A valve member 8 opens when the gas flow stops to allow material which has settled in the pipe 3 to be removed. The container 6 is supported on springs 14 on guide posts 13 the arrangement being such that when the flow of material into the container stops, the container rises, whereby a collar 10 on the pipe 3 closes the outlet apertures 7 and a switch 9 cuts off the gas flow At the top of the pipe 3 a separator is provided, Figs. 3-7 (not shown).
