Headings F1M and F1N In a reciprocating compressor or engine, comprising two pistons 2, 5 separated by a body of liquid 4 and reciprocable in a cylinder 1 to vary the volume of a working space 3, the piston 2 is sealed to the cylinder by a rolling diaphragm 8 arranged to be continuously subjected to a constant pressure difference thereacross which is unaffected by the inertia forces of the piston 2 and liquid 4. The constant pressure differential is produced by a tension spring 34 connected at one end to the piston 5 and at the other end to a compensating weight 33 carried by a lever 30 connected by pivots 31, 32 to the pistons 2, 5. The mass of the weight 33 and the position of the pivots 31, 32 is chosen so that the inertia forces of the piston 2 and the liquid 4 which tend to vary the pressure difference on the diaphragm are balanced. To maintain the amount of liquid between the pistons constant, liquid continuously supplied to the space by a pump 9 is allowed to drain to the inlet of the pump at a rate determined by the co-action between the skirt of the piston 2 and holes 11 in the piston 5. The rolling diaphragm may be reversed in which case the tension spring 34 is replaced by a compression spring. The compensation weight may be connected to the pistons 2, 5 through a cable-pulley system, Fig. 5 and 6 (not shown) instead of by a lever.
