Thin-walled ceramic ware may be formed by isostatic pressing of a granulated ceramic mixture in a mould having a core to which a membrane is fixed by filling the mould with the ceramic material, evacuating to prevent cracking or bowing of the ware, and pressing the membrane hydraulically against the ceramic. The moulding cavity 50 is formed between a mould part 49 and core 32 having a membrane 38 fixed thereto. The mould part 49 has an opening for filling which is closed by plate 52 movably fixed by spring- loaded bolt 55 to a top plate 54. Air passages 53 run through plates 52, 54 through which air can be evacuated from or supplied to the mould to be exerted on the ceramic ware to assist ejection by movement of plate 52 relative to plate 54. Hydraulic fluid is supplied through passage 37 to space 35 between the core 32 and membrane 38.
