Fibre-forming synthetic linear polycarbonamides containing recurring amide-groups in the main polymer chain separated by at least 2 carbon atoms are rendered antistatic by the introduction 0À1-20% of polyoxyalkylenated hydrogenated castor oil, containing 10-500 oxyalkylene units per molecule. The polyamide may be prepared by heating the reactants, e.g. a diamine-dicarboxylic acid salt, at 180- 300‹ C. in an inert atmosphere, e.g. N 2, until an intrinsic viscosity of 0.4 is reached. Polyamides specified are: nylon 6, nylon 11, nylon 66, nylon 6, 10 and nylon 6, 12. The oil may be a polyoxyethylenated hydrogenated castor oil in which the alkyleneoxy part is of M.W. 400-22,000. It may be added to the polyamide-forming ingredients before or during reaction or to the finished polymer melt or flake before extrusion. Other additives may include delustrants, antioxidants, plasticizers and viscosity stabilizers.
