The system fitted to shunting locomotives automatically determines the distance of other vehicles ahead on the same track. It uses an AC fed oscillatory circuit of which the inductance is changed by the varying section of free rails between the locomotive and the obstacle. A wobble generator (4) is coupled to the oscillator circuit (3) whose frequency can be set with the aid of a control voltage rising after preset time intervals over a range of the resonant frequency of the circuit (3) dependent on the braking distance of the locomotive. This feeds a discriminator which on equality of the wobble generator frequency and resonant frequency and resonant frequency generates a signal to terminate the time interval in progress. This follows since the control voltage level at the end of each period is a direct measure of the distance.
