1,239,182. Knitting machines. K. I. J. ROSEN. 5. Jan., 1970 [22 Jan., 1969], No. 461/70. Heading D1C. In a yarn feed to a knitting machine, yarn F from a bobbin 2 is wound tangentially under tension on to a storage drum 7 on which it is displaced axially by an element lying at an angle on the drum periphery or sliding thereon and which forms an irregular ball from which the yarn is withdrawn axially. As shown bobbin 2 is carried on a pin 3 on a carrier arm 1 mounted on a knitting machine frame and is fed through yarn guiding elements 4, 5, 6 and a disc brake 8 to the driven storing drum 7 mounted beneath arm 1. Drum 7 is formed by a circular end carrying a series of rods 7a. The rim 9b of a spoked wheel 9 fits on the outside of the drum 7 with the wheel inclined to the longitudinal axis of the drum and biassed by spring F', the spokes 9a extending between rods 7a. When yarn builds up on drum 7, it finally causes wheel 9 to pivot against spring F' and operates a microswitch to stop the motor driving the drum. When sufficient yarn has been used, wheel 9 pivots down again and switches the motor on. In modifications, drum 7 may be stationary and the yarn wound on by a rotatable arm. Drum 7 may be a closed polished cylinder or may be polygonal. A sliding element may engage longitudinal grooves in the outside of the drum. A photoelectric device may be used to control the drum being operated by light reflected from the drum surface.
