An extruder with a vertical barrel 11 containing a revolving extusion screw 10 supplied with plastic material from a hopper arranged along an axial extension of the barrel is characterized in that the supply to the extrusion screw passes through the hub 16 of a driving pulley 15 held in fixed relation to the screw. The pulley 15 is located between two stationary plates, the lower 12 forming the upper surface of the barrel 11 and the upper 13 being rigidly joined to the lower and carrying a stationary feed hopper 34, 35 and the hub 16 carries on the hopper side a feedscrew 40 promoting feed from the hopper to the extrusion screw. The hub is mounted for rotation on bearings 20, 21, 22 and contains ducts 36 for passage of plastics material and a central bore 30 to engage the screw 10 and hold it in fixed relation by key 31 and fitting screw 32. The feed-screw 40 is situated on an extension of the hub 16 and inside a frustoconical sleeve 35 forming an extension of the hopper 34 and tapers at the same angle as hopper extension 35. A chamber 37 in the lower stationary plate 12 surrounds the feed-screw. The outer surface 19 of the pulley 15 may be grooved for engagement with driving means.
