1279446 Halogenated methylene compounds PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 25 Sept 1969 [26 Sept 1968 25 Oct 1968] 47255/69 Headings C2C and C2P [Also in Division C5] Compounds of the general formula YSP1/SP.CX 2 .YSP1/SP in which one atom X is hydrogen, chlorine, bromine or iodine and the other atom X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, and each group YSP1/SP is -PO 3 R1 2 or -COORSP1/SP, where RSP1/SP is an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, haloalkyl, haloaryl, haloaralkyl, haloalkaryl, alkenyl, haloalkenyl or nitroaryl group; provided that when both groups YSP1/SP are -PO 3 RSP1/SP 2 , RSP1/SP has 7-22 carbon atoms, when both groups YSP1/SP are -COORSP1/SP, RSP1/SP has 4-22 carbon atoms, and when one group YSP1/SP is -PO 3 RSP1/SP 2 and the other group YSP1/SP is -COORSP1/SP, RSP1/SP has 7-22 carbon atoms; are prepared by reacting a compound YSP1/SP.CH 2 .YSP1/SP with a hypohalite ion OX- where X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, the molar ratio of OX-/YSP1/SP.CH 2 .YSP1/SP being from 0À75 : 1 to 6 : 1, in a two-phase reaction mixture comprising (A) an aqueous solution containing substantially no electrolyte other than hypohalite ions and the products, such as alkali metal and halogen ions, arising from generation of the hypohalite, and from 1 to 50% by weight of a water-miscible organic solvent, and (B) the methylene compound and optionally a water-immiscible organic solvent, the reaction temperature being 0-75‹ C., the pH of phase (A) being greater than 7 and the reaction time being from 1 minute to 2 hours. The invention also comprises compounds of the formula Y.CX 2 .Y, where Y has the same meaning as YSP1/SP except that when both groups Y are -PO 3 RSP1/SP 2 , RSP1/SP has 9-22 carbon atoms, and when both groups Y are -COORSP1/SP, RSP1/SP has 5-22 carbon atoms, which are used as extreme pressure additives for lubricants (see Division C5).
