1289966 Diphenyl ethene derivatives FERROSAN AB 23 Dec 1969 [24 Dec 1968] 61474/68 Heading C2C Compounds I in which R 1 is H or 1-4 C alkyl and R 2 is alkyl or 2-5C alkenyl or CR 1 R 2 is an alicyclic ring are prepared by dehydration of a mono- or diacetal of Formula II : in which R is H or an acetal grouping (not more than one R being H); R 3 and R 4 are H or 1-6 C alkyl or R 3 and R 4 together with the group to which they are attached form a pyranyl ring; followed by hydrolysis and optionally esterification of the mono- or diacetals formed. The compounds II may be prepared by reacting an ester R 1 R 2 CH-COOR 5 or a ketone RO-C 6 H 4 -COCHR 1 R 2 with an organometallic compound containing the group RO-C 6 H 4 - (R 5 is an alkyl group). p-Methoxymethoxy-2-ethyl-butyrophenone is prepared by reacting p-hydroxy-2-ethyl-butyrophenone with chlorodimethyl ether.
