Insulators are made from particles of fireproof materials with a density less than 0.321 g/cm3 e.g. perlite or vermiculite, which are mixed with an aqs. solution containing a silicic acid binder consisting of at least one of lithium-, potassium-, sodium-, or guanidinium silicate or a quaternary ammonium silicate, in a ratio of binder to solid particles of 4:1 to 1:3.5, and 5-60% of the weight of solid is silicic acid. The solution may also contain a latent acid e.g. formamide, ethylacetate, 2-hydroxyethylacetate, glyceroldiacetate or ethylformate, and the mixture may be hardened by passing CO2.
