In a rotary cylinder block axial piston pump or motor, the non-rotary distributing valve 3 is provided with grooves 6, outside the valve ports 4, having end portions 7 closer to the axis of the valve. The grooves 6 are supplied with liquid from the pump or motor cylinders via bores (8, Fig. 3, not shown), in the cylinder block (1) which communicate with the grooves at the ends 7. Pressure relieving grooves 9 or recesses in the distributing valve 3 are arranged to communicate with blind bores (10, Fig. 3), in the cylinder block valve face for the removal of liquid and dirt from the blind bores which is collected during their passage over the grooves 6.
