Preparation of Polyvinyl Acetate Adhesive Emulsions

Polyvinyl acetate is prepared by polymerising vinyl acetate in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a polymerization initiator combination comprising (1) a water soluble redox polymerization initiator which is hydrogen peroxide and a polyvalent metal formaldehyde sulphoxylate and (2) a vinyl acetate soluble organic peroxide polymerization initiator, and also in the presence of a watersoluble, partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate emulsifier having a residual polyvinyl acetate content of between 10% and 30% by weight with at least part of said emulsifier having a solution viscosity of at least 50 centipoises measured in a 4% aqueous solution at 20‹ C. In the example vinyl acetate is polymerized in the presence of water, partially hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, zinc formaldehyde sulphoxylate, decyl benzene sodium sulphonate, hydrogen peroxide, dilauryl peroxide and sodium bicarbonate.
