A tubular shield which surrounds the contacts of a vacuum switch has an outwardly extending central flange gripped between flanges of two envelope parts which are joined at their flanges. As shown, the shield 35 is formed of two identical parts 35A, 35B welded together at flanges 37 and retained with the flanges 37 gripped between the welded together flanges 7A and 9A of annular members 7 and 9 joined to respective glass envelope parts 3 and 5. The envelope is closed by end plates 15, 21 on which the fixed and movable contacts 25, 27 are mounted, the former being mounted on a support 17 provided with holes 33 for evacuation of the envelope during manufacture. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the flanges 37 are shaped to fit the contours of the envelope flanges so as to provide additional space in the envelope near the contact making surfaces which have a larger area than those of the Fig. I arrangement.
