In an electrical machine split brush assembly comprising sliding brush elements 6 and an elastomeric damping plate 4 surmounted by a rigid plate 3, the plates are not connected rigidly to the elements but gudgeons 5 fixed to either the elements or the rigid plate and fitting with clearance in holes in the plates or elements respectively permit relative movement between the elements yet prevent the plates from tilting due to eccentric thrust on the rigid plate. The gudgeons may be of cylindrical or wedge-shaped section and formed of metal, laminated glass plus resin, or moulded resin; the elements may be of carbon.
