In producing a high strength carbon fibre cloth, continuous yarns of polymeric fibre material of a type which can be oxidized by heating below its m.pt. or point of destruction in an oxidizing atmosphere are so oxidized and then woven by a conventional process to provide a woven cloth of oxidized yarns and this cloth is then carbonized by heating in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to a temperature in the region of 1000‹ C. to provide a carbon fibre cloth. Preferably the polymer fibre is oxidized by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere at a temp. in the range 100-250‹ C. whilst held under tension. The carbonized cloth may be heated at a temperature above the carbonizing temp. and up to 3000‹ C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere when graphitization presumably occurs. The cloth may be held under tension during this step. The fibres specified are polyacrylonitrile and copolymers thereof, polyamide aromatic polyester, and polyvinyl alcohol fibres.
