A test beam specimen 1 is clamped in bars 2 which may be rotated by pulleys 4 and 10 supported on pendulous rods 8. Cords 5 and a weight 6 rotate the pulleys, and means 11 such as an electric screw jack or pressure device can be operated to apply bending movements to the beam at any desired rate. The beam may be bowed upwardly if desired, and a core 12 movable in a transformer 13 may be used to vary a circuit 16 and indicate on an instrument 17. In a modification the beam and pulleys may be arranged to be moved by axles in bearings on horizontal tracks and movements of the beam arranged to alter the capacity of a condenser or swing a light spot reflecting mirror.
