Low polymeric reaction products consisting of 2-35 monomer units from ketene and an aldehyde of the general formula RCHO in which R represents H, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl are prepared by reacting ketene with the aldehyde in the presence of a tetraalkyltitanate or a condensation product thereof, the alkyl groups containing 2-18 carbons, at a temperature of 20-110‹ C. when the aldehyde is other than crotonaldehyde and at a temperature of 20-70‹ C. when the aldehyde is crotonaldehyde. The aldehyde may be mixed with 0À01-1% by weight of a stearically hindered phenol of the formula wherein R 1 and R 2 are tert - butyl, iso - propyl, or cyclohexyl and R 3 is H, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, carboxyl or carboxyalkyl.
