1284665 Removing hydrocarbon contaminants from gases E W MERRILL 4 Sept 1970 [10 Sept 1969] 42359/70 Heading B1L Organic contaminants such as hydrocarbons are removed from inorganic gases such as air by contacting the gas stream with an aerosol comprising particles having an aqueous core and an oleophilic surface, e.g. of DL-dipalmitoyl-z-lecithin. Preferably the gas stream is saturated with water vapour by a countercurrent scrubbing before being treated with the aerosol in such concentration that the distance between the particles is 10-100 times the mean free path of the pollutant molecules. The gas stream and entrained aerosol is then passed through a dwell chamber in a time of about 1 minute, the emerging stream being passed to a separator. The emerging gas from the separator may be dried before use, while the aerosol particles recovered may be recycled.
