A valve for controlling an hydraulic clutch which drives a variable speed cooling fan in an I.C. engine (not shown), comprises a fluid temperature sensitive element 11 which is located in the cylinder head or block of the engine and is closed at one end by a diaphragm 22. Movement of the diaphragm 22 actuates a valve member 26 with respect to a seat 7 through an adjustable tappet 25, 3 to control the flow of a fluid from a pump (not shown) through a passageway 19, 16 and axial passageways 4 in the member 26 to the fan clutch (not shown) through passageways 9, 18. The diaphragm 22 closes one side of a chamber 28 in communication with the passageway 9, through a port 2. Movement of the diaphragm 22 also causes fluid to be forced from the chamber 28 to the passageway 9. A magnetic plug 6 is located adjacent the inlet 16.
