1,219,284. Heat-treating mild steel. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. Feb.14, 1968 [Feb.21, 1967], No.8088/67. Heading C7A. Wrought mild steel having not more than 0À1% carbon is austenitized, preferably at 1000‹ C., and is then quenched to below the transformation range at 100‹ C. to 500‹C. per second. Cooling may be effected by quenching in oil, or by gas jets, liquid sprays, concentrations of gas in liquid, or slurries. The process is particularly applied to steel containing up to 0À5% manganese, up to 0À05% phosphorus, up to 0À05% sulphur, up to 0À05% nitrogen, and up to 0À1% aluminium, and the product may be used in the production of tin plate.
