[Also in Division C5] The sulphates of saturated secondary alcohols are prepared by reacting saturated secondary alcohols having 10-20 carbon atoms with an adduct of sulphur trioxide with dioxan at a temperature of 10‹ C. to 15‹ C. The adduct may be made by adding sulphur trioxide to a stirred mixture of dioxan and an inert solvent and the secondary alcohol is then added to this stirred suspension which is maintained at - 10‹ to 15‹ C. Suitably the adduct contains from 0À5 to 1À5 moles of sulphur trioxide per mole of dioxan and an excess of up to 25% of the adduct is present in the reaction mixture. Suitable solvents include dioxan, carbon disulphide, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, ethylene dichloride and tetrachloroethane. The crude reaction product can be mixed with alkali to neutralize any unreacted sulphur trioxide and evaporating any solvent and spray drying the product. Alternatively sufficient alkali can be added during neutralization to form a salt, e.g. the sodium or potassium salt, of the sulphate. The products are used as detergents.
