A cam-driven switching device for providing a choice of two reciprocatory motions of a washing machine container comprises a cam 2 (coupled to a gear-wheel 1) and a slide 3 having a follower tooth 4 at one end. At its other end, slide 3 is coupled to a blade 9 by a notch 8 and to a blade 16 by a link 13 and a lever 15 rigidly secured to the blade 16. When tooth 4 rides on cam lobes 22 the blades 9 and 16 engage respective fixed contacts 25 and 27, and, when tooth 4 drops into recesses 30, the contacts 24 and 26 are engaged, respectively. While tooth 4 rides on cam surfaces 23 the blades 9 and 16 are intermediate their respective fixed contacts and, owing to the linkage 13, 15, these dwell times differ.
