Novel compounds of formula (wherein R 1 is C 1-3 alkyl; R 2 is C 1-4 alkyl; X is an oxo or ketal group, or a group where RSP1/SP is H or C 1-4 hydrocarbyl and RSP11/SP is H, C 1-11 optionally substituted hydrocarboncarboxylic acyl, C 1-7 alkyl, cycloalkyl or up to 7 carbon atoms and optionally substituted by a 1-(C 1-4 alkoxy) group, or is a tetrahydropyranyl or tetrahydrofuranyl group; and the wavy line denotes the α- or #-configuration) are prepared by reacting the corresponding 2 - alkyl - #SP2/SP - compounds with an epoxidizing agent. The products may be interconverted by conventional transformations of the 17-substituents. Compounds of the above formula are said to exhibit antiestrogenic, uterotropic, implantation-inhibition, myogenic, androgenic, estrogenic, anti-cancer and anti-uterotropic activities and to enhance the estrogenic activity of estrogens, and may be made up with carriers, diluents or coatings into pharmaceutical compositions for oral or parenteral administration.
