The sulphonic acid group-contg. condensation products contain a triazine component of formula: (in which R is hydrogen, an alkyl or alkenyl gropu, pref. with 1 to 17C atoms, an aryl or an aralkyl group). They may be made by reaction of a substituted guanamine with an aldehyde, pref. with 1 to 8C atoms, and sulphonic acids groups are introduced by treatment with sodium bisulphite. The lower mol. wt. products containing up to 20 triazine groups are useful dispersing agents for difficulty dispersible materials. Where R is a low alkyl group they are suitable for dispersing hydrophobic solids in water, and where it is a high alkyl group, for making stable paraffin emulsions. They are also used as hydrophobic additives for fabrics, cement or plaster, for preventing calcium soap formation and as foaming agents.
